Health Tests

Why are our Bernedoodle puppies different?
Bernedoodles today are not created equal when it comes to health and early development. Some breeders don’t health test the parents, which comes with risks. We offer thoroughly health tested parental bloodlines, a peaceful farm environment, unparalleled tender care, and advanced development opportunities. Simply put, we give them the best possible start to a happy, healthy life. We view our role as caring for your puppy until you can bring them home to love them forever.

Why is health testing Bernedoodles so important?
F1 Bernedoodles are a mixture of a purebred Bernese Mountain Dog and a purebred Poodle. Each of these breeds carry potential risk for specific breed-related diseases. Dogs may appear just fine on the outside, but if not tested before breeding, they can pass these things on to their puppies. You’ve probably noticed that the market is saturated with Bernedoodles right now. Anyone can go find an inexpensive one with a few clicks on their computer. Be warned, you definitely get what you pay for! If the Bernedoodle is “cheap” you are most likely getting a puppy that does not have these parental clearances, which could lead to potential heartbreak down the road, incurable diseases, and/or expensive conditions.  Producing puppies with healthy blood lines is extremely important to us. When you’re considering buying a puppy, always ask about the health tests! We will gladly answer questions about this.

Did you know health tests can take nearly two years to complete?
Dogs have to reach a certain age before they can take specific tests. That is one reason some breeders don’t do them. It took us nearly this long to complete Pearl’s health tests and for some, we even had to travel out-of-state. Additionally, health tests are extremely expensive (another reason they often get skipped)! In a nutshell, doing health tests takes patience and money. Although it’s not easy to wait, and it’s often painful to add to business costs, the peace of mind is absolutely priceless. There is no such thing as a perfect dog, but we’re confident we’ve done everything possible to mitigate potential problems down the road.

How do we decide which studs to use?
For our 2023 litters we have considered over 50 studs and compared their genetics to Pearl’s. There is so much more to these pairings than two cute dogs! We look at things like temperament, coat texture, markings, health, age, size, etc. We will only use health tested, happy and cared for studs in our program. Each pairing involves months of planning and analyzing! It is the most responsible and considerate thing to do for both puppies and buyers.
